Scale Rope Thickness: What to Use for 1:72, 1:48 and 1:24 Model Ships
Picking the wrong rope thickness is the fastest way to make a good model ship look like a toy. Too thick and the shrouds swamp the hull; too thin and the rigging disappears from across the room. Here's how to match the rope to the scale before you make a single metre of it.
Start from the real ship
A first-rate like HMS Victory carried shrouds of roughly 15–18 cm in diameter at the windward channels, tapering as they rose. Anchor cable was far heavier still. The trick of scale modelling isn't to reproduce that exactly — it's to reproduce the *relationship* between the lines so the eye reads "ship" rather than "string."
A simple rule: take the real diameter in metres, divide by the scale, and you get the model diameter in metres. Convert to millimetres.
- 1:72 (roughly 1 inch = 6 feet): a 16 cm shroud becomes about 2.2 mm. Ratlines and lifts drop to 0.3–0.5 mm.
- 1:48 (quarter-inch scale): that same shroud is about 3.3 mm; fine rigging around 0.5–0.7 mm.
- 1:24 (half-inch scale, large display models): shrouds near 6.7 mm; even the finest line sits around 1 mm.
Plan in bands, not single sizes
Don't chase one perfect number. Real rigs use a handful of sizes:
- Anchor cable / main stays — the thickest. Use the upper end of the scale figure.
- Shrouds and lower stays — a step down.
- Upper shrouds, lifts, and running rigging — thinner again.
- Ratlines and finer detail lines — the thinnest.

Thread choice drives thickness

A practical starter set
If you're building at 1:72, start with three sizes: ~2 mm for shrouds, ~1 mm for running rigging, and ~0.4 mm for ratlines. At 1:48, bump those to ~3 mm / ~1.5 mm / ~0.6 mm. Make a sample card of each and keep it by the bench.
